Direct connection means there is no need for an amplifier or 'audio processor'. Direct Connect or 'DC' cords provide installation into a dedicated headset port, usually underneath the telset. You will see a picture of a headset top etched over the port. When using a DC cable the user does lose some of the frexibility the Amplifier or Audio Processor provides such as receive and transmit adustment. The user has to rely on the telsets' volume control for amplification of the receive. For this reason, it is recommended that a Bianaural top (T400) be used when in an 'open' office environment.
